A trip to Seattle recently was no exception.

I was in the balcony of the picturesque Marriott Residence Inn Lake Union, began an unmistakable sound heard through the ports below. Which made me smile widely was the wonderful sound of a large radial engine pulling a beautiful flying De Havilland Beaver in yellow and white in the Lake. For me, is like going to the Symphony.

The seaplane, Kenmore Air – airline offers one of the best views of Seattle, Victoria and the San Juanes can be found. They fill their sightseeing flights, so when I called, I told them that he was a pilot/writer and was eager to have my first ride of seaplanes, and then write about the experience. Lake Union Supervisor of the Kenmore found a way to respond to the me me slipping into the headquarters of the cabin of his afternoon right alone run from its Lake Union Terminal occupied to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island and then to port of deer and sound of the West in the Orcas Island. He was one of the most impressive journeys I have made over the air “ride along of media” ever…a I will never forget.

I had my notions preconceived about flight in a seaplane, and all were proven incorrect. Preconceived idea # 1 was removed when I took the pilot, Chuck Perry prefers to be called “Captain”, but quickly found that “captains” led to tugs, and Alaska fly out of the water in aircraft equipped with floats is really like the rest of us pilots.

Preconceived idea # 2 came when Chuck lit up the hanging of 750 shp PT6 in the nose of the Otter. Blindfolded, Perry could have done this maneuver quickly, as it seemed that he had done some ten million years before. With calm, raised in power, he noted the nose until the middle of the lake where there was no sailing ships and sent the throttle to stop ahead. With only three passengers and baggage on board, were out of the water in well less than half the distance that he hoped, eliminating my expectation that seaplanes to always led to launch.

Seattle is a very beautiful city from the air. The outlet of Lake Union takes you a little to the West of North Puget Sound, and everywhere, is something really great to see. Level in 2000, see the Whidbey Island slipping by bass the right wing, before that we went to envelope the straight of Juan de Fuca.

Soon, see Chuck begin to get new power, and a look at the 430 Garmin tells me that Friday Harbor: our first stop: next to the left. The winds are light and from about seven, for units of Chuck straight Otter in the intestine of Friday Harbor, cuts of 80 knots and fleet in what I thought an arrival…is even possible greaser fat landings in the ocean?

Here’s the drill to the parking lot of a Turbine Otter on a pier itself: maintain sufficient speed through the water to allow the authority to the water rudders. Lose that, Chuck warns, and will the giant tail of the Otter catch even a small amount of wind and weather vane the plane possibly out of control. Near the base of the left side, kick in lots of right rudder while throws support to reverse the pitch. This puts the level in the type of a slide towards the base, but wait…the is only just beginning.

At this point, Chuck POPs opens the door to the left pilot and fades in the side of the plane in a graceful movement that if all goes well, will end with his feet firmly planted at the base. At this point – for about two seconds, the Otter is free of any slider along the base, controlling us. Soon to ascertain what these long cables hanging from the wings for…they is what Chuck grabs Otter wing moves on his head. As it has been done many times before, he reigns the Otter, firmly pull towards the base. A blur of their experienced hands wrapped a tie down rope to the float…and that we have come.

After loading the souls and Samsonites in the Otter, the short flight on deer Harbour was a without events. But as us s–l – o-w-l-and filming in a sailboat attempting to navigate somewhere, directly in our twelve. The problem was that Chuck was not sure where were going to try to his bow. Right to navigate in our way, or is derived from left? As the casting Otter close, Chuck made orally “plan B”, which was wide right, then hook left behind and, then hard to begin dance coupling.

Now with all complete seats and the aft baggage hold full, Chuck and the Otter must work a little more to get the step and in the air as a return to Seattle. With all the power, our pilot yanks in the yoke, but you must keep it there perhaps four seconds for the Otter to rise in the floats. Once secured the passage, Chuck moves the yoke forward, but struggles with the Otter a little coaxing two drifters to leave the water at the same time. Spear in its entirety and hard wing left to correct what he felt was not right with the floats. I am surprised how enthusiastic seat-of-pants of this pilot flying should be and can only imagine the rodeo this maximum gross weight takeoff could be in choppy water and vicious winds.

We slip into Seattle, and highlight the Lake Union, which seems small 20 nm out and be inserted right in the Centre of the city. Chuck pulls power and follows the I-5 freeway until the end, falling slightly to the South and East. While they descend, I remember thinking that the Lake is not really getting any older. Chuck analyses water for boats and choose a nice fat corridor between any floating traffic to establish the Otter. Without a stir, we get, the last remaining rays of the Sun teasing us as reflected in the skyscrapers in the Centre of the city and the Space Needle.

WELROME Hotel is a nice little hotel, with seven rooms: one quadruple, two triple, four double. It is centrally located near Piazza della Repubblica and Termini railway station, which makes it easy to get a bus to anywhere. From the hotel you can reach on foot the main Roman museums, monuments and points of interest (Colosseo, Foro Romano, Galleria Borghese, Museo Nazionale Romano, Fontana di Trevi, Piazza di Spagna, etceteras) along routes that we will be happy to show on the city map that we provide to our customers free of charge. The Vatican city is only 12 minutes away by metro, or 25 minutes by bus n. 40 (express line) from WELROME hotel.

Each room has air conditioning, direct telephone, safe-deposit box, TV, Wi-Fi, silent refrigerator, bathroom with shower and hairdryer. Towels are changed every day. The price includes everything (e.g. taxes and air conditioning), but not breakfast. However, there are plenty of coffee bar nearby where you can have breakfast at very moderate prices. It is also close to a large supermarket, to an open air market and to a laundromat, which is a rarity in Rome.

WELROME Hotel is in Via Calatafimi number 15, the second street to the right of Via Volturno, four minutes on foot from Termini central railway station (see WELROME Location page). From Fiumicino airport there is a direct train to Termini station every half hour. From Termini station we suggest coming on foot, as it is very near. If you take a taxi from Fiumicino airport, ask for Via Calatafimi, second street to the right of Via Volturno.

Welcome to the 3 star Hotel St. Moritz, a jewel of hospitality in the heart of Rome. Thanks to its location, the most of the highlights of Rome can be reached in a pleasant walk: Piazza Venezia, the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, the Quirinal Presidential Palace and many more. A friendly atmosphere, the competence and the courtesy will ensure you a pleasant stay at a very convenient price. Right in front of the hotel there is the famous “Palazzo delle Esposizioni”, used to house prestigious exhibitions of artists from all over the world.

In Piazza Venezia there is the symbol of the unification of Italy in 1870 with Rome as the capital city. It was begun in 1885 and inaugurated in 1911. In the Victor Emmanuel II Monument, at the foot of the statue of Rome, is the National Shrine, the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Since 1921 the tomb has contained the remains of a soldier who died in the 1915-18 war.

The area in which is the Hotel St. Moritz is also well served by public transport: buses and subway at only few meters will grant you the best connection to all the city’s districts.

In ten minutes you will reach the most important historical sight of the world: the Colosseum.
This Flavian amphitheatre took its name either because it stood near the statue of Nero, the “Colosseum”, or because of its own colossal dimension. Three types of columns support the arcades and the walls are made of brick and volcanic tufa faced with marble blocks. Colosseum is well-known for the spectacles organised in it, consisting in duels between gladiators and wild animals. Only Rome can offers a so gorgeous scenario!

Reception 24h, comfortable rooms, air conditioning, internal courtyard, tourist information, guided tours of Rome, elevator, luggage deposit, shuttle service from/to the airports.

The rich continental breakfast is included in the room’s rate and will be served in the welcoming breakfast room or, in summer seasons, in the verdant internal courtyard.

Hotel Splendide Royal – Rome

The Hotel Splendide Royal in Rome is a luxury five stars hotel, designed to be royal, luxurious and the same stature of the most accredited hotels in Europe.
Located in the noble center of Rome, a city which was and is once again an intersection of cultures and communication.

After more than one year of skilled re-structuring, this 19th century palace – once headquarters of the Roman Maronite community and only a stroll away from the famed Via Veneto – is today a luxury hotel and, in its own way, a symbol of the changes taking place within the Capital City’s fine tradition of hospitality.
Recently baptized as Splendide by guests themselves, the hotel is “toutcourt”, full of that warmth and kindness found usually only among friends. Guests appreciate the richness in style and the spacious architecture – in distinct contrast with the typical present-day minimalism governing most new hotels’ interior decor and design.

The Baroque Rome of Bernini, Borromini and Pietro da Cortona, the city that tourists admire everyday by just walking through its streets and across its piazzas finally has a hotel which gracefully offers that same decor and furniture once only to the noble palaces of 17th century Roman aristocracy. Here, the lush and rich sumptuousness of the city’s Baroque period comes to life again.

The Murano glass chandelier which Luchino Visconti chose for the ballroom scene in his masterpiece film “The Leopard”, now lights up the hotel’s hall amidst the marble floors’ geometric designs. On the walls, golden “boiseries” enhance the warm tones of brocades while the Winter Garden’s sparkling stucco and lush mirrors reflect the soft and natural rays of light beaming in through the vault from above.
